After Dental Implant Surgery

Post-operative care instructions from Oral Surgeons of Indiana

Important: Dental implants require careful healing (osseointegration) over several months. Follow all instructions closely. Call (317) 876-1095 with any concerns.

First 24 Hours

  • Bite gently on gauze to control bleeding. Change every 30–45 minutes as needed.
  • Keep your head elevated to minimize swelling.
  • Apply ice to your face (20 min on, 20 off) during the first 24–48 hours.
  • Do not disturb the surgical site with your tongue or fingers.

Diet

  • Eat soft, cool, or room-temperature foods for 1–2 weeks.
  • Avoid hard, chewy, or sticky foods near the implant site.
  • Do not chew directly on the implant until cleared by your surgeon.

Oral Hygiene

  • Keep your mouth clean — this is critical for osseointegration (implant bonding to bone).
  • After 24 hours, rinse gently with warm salt water after every meal.
  • Brush adjacent teeth carefully, but avoid directly brushing the implant abutment/healing cap for the first week.
  • If prescribed chlorhexidine rinse, use as directed.

Activity & Restrictions

  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 3–5 days.
  • Do not smoke — smoking significantly increases implant failure rates.
  • Avoid alcohol for at least 72 hours and while on prescribed medications.

Long-Term Implant Care

  • Implants require regular professional cleaning — schedule visits every 6 months.
  • Floss around the implant daily using implant floss or a water flosser.
  • If you grind your teeth, ask about a night guard to protect your implant.

Call Us Immediately If You Experience:

  • Persistent bleeding beyond 24 hours
  • Increasing pain or swelling after 3 days
